What can the study of tree rings tell us about worldwide patterns of climate change? Tree rings provide a record of climate during the life of the tree. Many trees are hundreds of years old, and some live as long thousands of years. In this sense, tree rings are some of the first existing “scientific records” about climate.

About Liz Smith

Liz Smith is a media producer and strategist with expertise in expedition writing, photography and film. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Science and Natural History Filmmaking from Montana State University and an undergraduate degree in Astronomy from Whitman College. She’s worked as a science communications director aboard research vessels in the Pacific Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, including expeditions exploring ancient Greek and Roman shipwrecks and searching for Amelia Earhart’s lost Electra in the deep sea. Prior to working in ocean research, Liz produced films and multimedia about astrophysics and earth science at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. She has also produced documentary work for the National Park Service and worked as a science reporter for NBC in Montana. Liz is member of Filmmakers for Conservation, the flying Ninety-Nines and American MENSA; and she sits on the Alumni Advisory Council for Montana State University’s Department of Film and Photography. She is a certified Advanced Scuba Diver and a single-engine private pilot.
