A New Year

200 episodes. 10,000,000 views.

For nearly 5 years TERRA has brought you stories of life from around our planet - vignettes about the people, places, and wild things that make life on earth worth living. As we continue with a milestone 200th episode and the addition of some fresh faces at TERRA, we remain committed to the mission of bringing you the best in science and nature programming from around the world. We are proud of what we have created. There are not many places with an archive of 200 unique programs focused on telling the untold stories and giving voice to the fragile planet and the people on it.

Our shows are meant for broad distribution. We package them for your iPod and iPad and iPhone. They are emailable, and embeddable, downloadable. We want these stories to be heard and we think they are - every month we total over 100,000 views. We encourage you to view our old episodes and to relish in the new ones. These are the visual records of 5 years on our planet, and a stunning portrait of it's current state.

Despite all of this work, the picture is not always good. We live in a time where decisions about scarce resources, changing climates, and energy insecurity will determine the very livelihoods of our children. This is a time to listen to science, to shun politics, and to become engaged in creating a sustainable society.

We welcome your feedback (we love it, actually) and we will continue in our humble pursuit to deliver fresh and inspiring content to your TVs, laptops, and iPhones each week. We thank the hundreds of producers that contribute their films to be shown on TERRA - without them none of this would be possible. And we thank you for watching - knowing you are out there is what keeps us going.

"What we see is people with a lot of backcountry experience who understand the science of avalanches, understand why avalanches form, why slopes are dangerous and know what to look for. Yet they still get in trouble. They get hungry for powder and don't look at the situation objectively. They want to ski the run." - Doug Chabot (director of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center) When five skiers set off to celebrate New Year's Eve 2005 in the backcountry of Montana's Centennial Range, no one thought that the trip would take Blake Morstad's life and leave Sam Kavanagh minus a leg. Camera footage buried during the avalanche was miraculously recovered months after the accident - and out of the ashes of this tragedy came a powerful film. "All of us that watch this movie will see ourselves in it," Chabot said. "We've all made similar mistakes - the difference is we got away with it."
